Fear, terror

My 10 year old son is terrified!! To get him to go to bed, he needs ALL the lights on. Even in the day time he is scared, He will not even go upstairs by himself, and if we make him go up, he comes running down with a look of pure terror on his face! He cant tell me why he is so scared, I've have asked him if he is seeing or hearing anything because at least there would be a reason. My daughter is starting to act the same way, but I'm thinking she only does it because of her brother, She will at least go upstairs during the day. We have tried to put crosses and prayers in their room, and be supportive, but I'm at my wits end, of course its an inconvenience, but more than that I'm really worried bout my son, i don't want him to be afraid of his own house, I should also mention that we have lived in 4 houses, same behavior in all of them.

Hi there,
Have you been with your son when his fear is triggered, not just by the thought of him being by himself? Is there a certain point (ie getting to the top of the stairs) that frightens him? If you can see when or where the fear is triggered, perhaps you can relate it to something?
It does sound like there is something deep down that is frightening him, maybe speaking to a doctor, or some one impartial, may shed some light.
I hope things get better soon, for you and your son.
