I just caught parts of tonights Supernanny episode (on channel 21 in Vancouver, BC) and saw that the mom was spanking her children and didn't seem to want to stop spanking them.
Is it just me or is it really disturbing? I think for the safety of her children she should stop or they should be taken away from her. I am a new mom and I don't agree with her hitting them. What do you think? Am I over-reacting? I'm shocked that they even air that episode, it looked as if she was really hurting them. |

Hi. Spanking is a tool in our parenting tool box to use for the appropriate consequence a parent decides. We do need to be careful with spanking as in all other areas of our parenting such as our love and respect for our husbands and our emotions and words toward our kids. Just because we say bad words or have bad thoughts toward someone doesn't mean we shouldn't talk. Spanking is not our only tool, but it is important just like our other tools.
I do agree with so many mothers that many do not know how to use some of our tools in our tool box. That is why it is so good to be involved with friends and our community to share our misuse of these tools, how to use some of our tools and share with each other how our tools have really made a beautiful work of art! Well said, Jackie Bell, and yes Flake: spanking is openly discouraged on Supernanny.
Here's why you should stop spanking your child and how to go about it. Any other tips?

For those of you who missed this episode with the Phelps family from near my hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, you can watch the entire Supernanny episode on my site.
It may help show what the mom was doing and how Jo helped her find another way to discipline the boys. |
