I watch supernanny on a regular basis and have learned a lot of very useful information. The only thing I would really like to understand more that they don't seem to explain in the show very well is the rules of time out. I understand that you first get down to your child's level and explain to them why they are being put in time out and for how long (one minute per age), but the part I don't understand is what do you do if the child is screaming or crying as loud as they possibly can because they don't want to be there. I am currently having this problem with my 3yr old son and normally I add more time until he brings the volume down to a better level. What is the correct way to do this. My child does however stay in the corner when he is put there but as I have seen on the show with putting a child back in time out over and over sometimes up to 27 times when does the time officially start.

The time officially starts when they are quiet and sitting. Don't add more time, just don't start the timer. Also, don't speak to them saying something like "You're just gonna be there longer the more you scream." Just let them scream, kick, throw, whatever and if they get up put them back. No communication is part of the discipline. Once they are sitting on the naughty chair, spot, whatever you use... then you start the timer for 3 minutes.
